Screenings

·       Vision & Hearing:  Students in grades Pre-K (4 yrs and older), Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd and 5th are screened in the first semester.  New students in 2nd and 4th will be screened if they are transferring from outside of Texas.  Parents may also request their student to be screened if they have any concerns with their child's hearing and/or vision.  A referral will be sent home by the campus nurse if a student fails a screening.

·       Type 2 Diabetes Screening: is completed for 3rd grade students by the campus nurse.  Acanthosis Nigricans (AN) is a skin marker related to high insulin levels and insulin resistance.  It is believed that when higher than normal insulin levels are present in the blood, it can cause growth of darkened skin in certain areas of the body such as the neck, armpits or groin.  These markings can help identify persons who run a risk of developing diabetes in the future.  Students with an AN marker present will also have their BMI (body mass index) and blood pressure assessed.  Parents will be notified by phone and/or a written referral letter which will summarize the results of these assessments and recommend a physician's evaluation.

·       Spinal Screening: assess for an abnormal curvature of the spine.  5th grade girls will be screened within the first semester of school.  Early detection of a spinal problem can make treatment easier.  The screening process will be further explained to parents prior to the scheduled screening.

Clothes

The clinic is always in need of extra clothes. If you have any gently used clothing that your child has out grown, please consider donating to the clinic. For sanitary purposes, we are asking that the underwear be new.

As always…

Every student should have a change of clothes (including underwear + socks) placed in a bag in the bottom of their backpack. This prevents the parent from being called to the school for a change of clothes. Clean clothing may be necessary for a food/drink mishap in the cafeteria, landing in mud/water on the playground, as well as for bathroom accidents.
